Montauk Sportfishing Report 7/10/17

Fluke fishing is making up for the poor early season’s fishing with lots of big fish, with the best action out in the deep water – 70-90’ – at Cartwright or Rocky Hill. Seabass are mixed in and with a 3 fish bag limit, you can usually catch that by mistake. The WINDY did exactly that over at Southwest Ledge. After trolling up a limit of stripers they decided to do some diamond jigging and wound up with a limit of seabass plus some giant porgies and a couple of stripers that were thrown back.

Around the Point the striped bass fishing is hot with lots of big fish along with shorts and mediums. Everything is catching them except maybe the eels. A lot more private boats that would usually be fishing live bait are using the wire these days.

Offshore it’s almost makos or bust, with few bluesharks around. Most are the typical summer fish up to 100 lbs. Nothing much on the tuna scene except hearing third hand or so about some fish here there and everywhere, but nothing concrete.
