You can catch many types of crabs on LI. No good if you are for hire, but comms and recs do it all the time.

It could be worse. You can be in Jersey where you can keep only one tog and they are biting so well that in sharing a rod with my cousin who had been fishing 3 times before over the past ten years, we combined for 13 keepers and another 10 shorts in an hour and a half with the requisite pictures and tangles.

It seems the powers that be [ D.E.C, A.S.M.F.C , N.M.F.S, etc.] have conspired and initiated a crab eradication program in the North East and Midatlantic states. It is a part of the bigger Tautog Fisheries Management Plan. It is a more direct and hassle free method of keeping people from catching Blackfish. No bait , No fishing pressure, reduced mortality. Pretty simple right? Now if they could only apply this common sense approach to straightening out the economy we would be all right in a few short years!
