Wednesday Feb 29 - End of day report
I just got word from the boys on the Viking Star who is fishing with a nice crowd aboard today. The weather is flat calm and warm and all morning we had a SOLID pick of quality Cod up to 30lbs! We have also seen some big Pollock! Our friend Captain Mark DeCabia is on a bus mans holiday and has already caught his recommended limit of 10 Cod! The dogs are barking today but the guys fishing through them all have some fat Cod in their boxes. What a great day so far! Captain Steven Sr who is stuck in the office working on the schedule looked at this early report and had the following to say,"Think back to two years ago, this was when the Cod bite started!" Check back later for the end of day report.
After this mornings great report (see below) things slowed down around mid morning and we went looking and found a couple of more Cod and had a decent shot of ling in the end. At the end of the day everyone went home with a nice bag of filets. Pete Ferguson of Hicksville had 10 fish and Mark DeCabbage of East Quogue NY also kept only is recommended limit of 10 cod. The fishing trio of Don Liesengang, George Spath and Jeff Spath managed 20 Cod and some Ling for the day. First place in the pool was taken by Albert Jackson of Hempstead NY with a 27.5lb Slob Cod. Second place was won by Kevin Kohlepp of Amityville NY with a 13lb Cod

Thursday Feb 23- Local Cod Wednesday Feb 29- Early Report
By 9:00 am the early report from the Viking Star was excellent! All morning the guys had a great steady pick of quality gaffing size COD, as well as some nice POLLACK in the mix, and some ling! Most guys were halfway or more to their recommended limits!! Well, the bite shut down at 930 we stopped for some Ling and caught them very well indeed! We tried getting the Cod riled up again but we only landed a few more. All in all a fantastic day on the Viking Star,

Tuesday Feb 21- Local Cod
Full report- Capt Steven Sr reports a good fun trip on the Viking Star. The boat was chartered by Comb's Bait and Tackle in Amityville, NY and what a great group of guys it was! Our first drop saw a steady pick of quality Cod, and that means plenty of "gaffers". The fish were nice sized, quality cod. There was also a nice mix of ling, as well as a couple of pollack. After that bite dwindled away, we moved around a bit and found another pick of ling to keep the action going. After that died, we looked around some more and found another good couple of shots of nice COD. All in all we put a very good catch together with high hook of Jeff Englehart of Seaford who had 7 cod, 10 ling. The pool winner was Richie Pickles Hoffman of Massapequa with a 27.5 lb cod to go along with his 4 cod and 6 ling in his cooler! The average was 3-5 cod per man and 5-8 ling per person. Captains Steven Sr, Steven Jr, Carl, and the rest of the Viking Fleet would again like to thank Billy Combs of Combs Bait and Tackle for putting this trip together with a great group of guys and we are looking forward to seeing you guys again in two weeks for your next charter! Sunday Feb 19- Local Cod
Capt. Carl reports a decent day today on the Viking Starship. We had another good crowd aboard and the weather started off windy, but ended up perfect. The fishing started off with a good steady pick of Cod and Ling and lasted for the first 4 hours of the day! We also saw huge Scup and Seabass, all released. The dogs were a bit more aggressive today too, but the morning bite made the day! After the first four hours of steady fishing catching Cod an Ling, things kinda fell apart and we saw a few more Cod and Ling here and there, but no steady bite materialized. Jay Cullinan of Babylon, NY took first place with a 15 pound Cod, and Dennis Stone of Levittown, NY took second place with a 13 pound Cod. All in all we ended up with a decent amount of fish onboard, and 3 crew members still had a couple hours worth of fish filleting for everyone.

Saturday Feb 18- Local Cod
Capt. Carl reports another fine day fishing on the Viking Starship. The morning bite was very slow, with just a couple cod here and a couple there while we were anchored up. It was a very slow pick until the wind died down just enough to try drifting, so, we did and caught some cod on every drift, but it was still just a slow pick. We worked it for a while until that shut completely down. After a few moves for not much else, we settled in on our last spot and it was very good! We had a strong shot of Cod, as well as a couple hundred ling to make the day for us. We did have a good crowd aboard, so everyones take varied, but those who fished hard were rewarded. Fred "Motor" Shea (of course) was high hook with 9 Cod and a bunch of ling. Wayne K was close behind with 8 Cod and a mess of ling. First place in the pool went to David Bowlby of Butler, NJ with a 14 pound Cod, and second place went to Dan Schreier of Sea Cliff, NY with a 12 pounder. All in all, it was a tough grind until the end of the day, but a couple extra hours made the day!
Friday Feb 17- Local Cod
A very excited Capt Steven Jr just called in with a good early report. The day started off slowly in the dark with only a couple of fish before the sun came up. Then after sunrise we go going on a drift and had a good steady pick of Cod with a couple of really good shots with Cod up to 20lbs. Today is looking promising and Capt. Steven Jr and Capt. Carl who is also onboard have some new spots they want to try. We continued to pick away on the drift with some drifts stronger than others. By day's end we had a very respectable catch of codfish on board of the Viking Star. Steve Bento was on fire today with 14 keepers, (only retaining the recommended limit). He released a few keepers and shorts as well. Mavros was also on fire with 13 keepers (orrl) and some shorts. Gene "Big Fish" Gabay of West Islip NY had the pool winning cod- a 26lber. Chris Biernacki of Moriches NY took second place.

Wednesday Feb 15- Local Cod
We ended up having a decent day on the cod boat today. It started off with a pick in the dark that stayed steady and lasted for a few hours into daylight. By mid morning it slowed down and we tried a few drifts and a couple more drops. We only found a few more cod here and there. Karl Bicknese of Yonkers took 1st place in the pool with a 13lb cod which was one of his 7 for the day and Jb Breitstone of Atlantic beach, NY took 2nd with one of the 8 cod that weighed in at 10lbs. Also Capt. Jimmy Schneider of the James Joseph came out and ended up with18 cod 11 of which were keepers (orl).
