Voyager 2 day Tilefish report

Postby JohnnySI » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:06 pm

Due to a last minute cancelation I was lucky enough to get on the Voyagers 2 day limmited manual reels only trip this was my first official tilefish trip..We left Sun. nite arrived at the grounds at first light, first drop was for rosefish put on a 40 oz sinker and watched the Baja special spin almost endlessly felt the bite I waited a few mins. as I had a 3 hook rig on then I started to crank  I was thinking what did I get myself into I was in shock its only 5 mins into the first drop and I was hoping that I wasn`t in over my head but my friend Ralph(Ironfish) assured me thats how everyone feels one their first drop and he was right so I finished cranking up and I had 3 nice rosies on and Ralph had a double of a rosie and I nice fat wreckfish that ended up winning the edible pool so back down I went next drop 2 were on.After this Capt. Jeff made a move to deeper water and sugested to go to a single hook rig so down I went and this time I was rewarded with my fist Golden Tile nice fish in high teens I was told. Made a few more drops and moves but the conditions were tough so Jeff decided a move to some shallow water was best and it paid off big time for the rest of the day there were flurries where goldens and bluelines flew over rails until dark. Jeff decided to anchor for the night and I stumbled to my bunk, next morning I woke up and some guys were already catching while we were still on the hook so I got out there and was into them again Jeff pulled the hook and on the drift we went the forecast for Tuesday was off again and it was an amazing morning out there catching fish until we called it quits and sailed home. What a class act the Voyager is right down from Capt. Jeff to the mates Dom and Chris everytime I go out with them I appreciate this operation more and more so I finished up with a dozen goldens,9 bluelines and 6 rosies. One side note when we went to the shallower water a switched from the Baja special on a Daiwa Saltiga SA-B-8040JR to a Saltist 40 and a Seeker 909 I was much more comfortable with this outfit it was a great trip and boy am I hooked..........Johnny Image

Johnny, outstanding report.....really, really enjoyed reading it. Spoke with Captain Jeff yesterday and he said it was SOME trip....and that is all I will say.

That was an insightful review you put up about the Baja and the Saltiga....more on this on the tilefish seminar story.
