Eastmans 4/15-4/16

My dad, Eben and I went fishing at Eastman's Thursday and Friday. Our hopes was loading up on haddock day one and cod day two. Day one we had a light crowd and were into some haddock. It was really tough though to get a haddock on the line as the cod were very thick. Honestly I never thought I would see the day I was angry to bring up a keeper cod. Well guess what I saw that day. I must have thrown back close to 10 keeper size cod as well as many many short cod. One drop there were so many cod Eben and I decided to jig being we were going to catch cod anyway no sense wasting time baiting up. I got one cod that looked to be about 15 pounds and was promptly released. It was a lot of fun jigging up those cod on my Calstar 800m and Saltiga 15 with a 8oz hammered diamond jig. I did manage a nice haddock on the jig as well. All the cod we caught and released shot right back down to the bottom which was a nice thing to see. We did hit a redfish/haddock drop for the final spot of the day where some nice haddock came in and some good size reds. Our total for the trip was 22 haddock and 26 reds. I managed 6 haddock and a good amount of reds. My dad was the haddock man with 10 haddock and a few reds. Eben got 6 haddock and a mess of reds also.

Friday I had all rigged up a 10 ounce lav and a blue/purple fly. Fishing was tough. We had rain, snow and sleet as well as some wind at times. I spent the day up in the pulpit jigging away. My efforts did pay off. We had a slow grind all day and the weather didn't make it any easier on us. Captain Phil tried all over looking for a hungry body of fish. He would land on some and it only seemed the shorter cod and the haddock were hungry. Then the spot would shut off. So off to another spot looking for more codfish. We hit one spot that last year on that time was a bail job and on the fish finder looked like all haddock so we gave it a shot and I hooked up instantly on the jig to a keeper cod. Then cast back out and a few minutes later was on again but it wasn't something that felt to familiar. Didn't feel much like a cod or haddock but what ever it was it was heavy. Well after reeling up and getting a good amount of head shakes a large grey form began to appear below the surface. Upon reaching the surface i was greeted to a large mouth wide open full of teeth. It was big wolffish that I had been looking for for quite a few years. Got it on the jig no less. After getting that fish in the boat my season was made. I couldn't really ask for anything more, my biggest wolffish to date and on a jig. I would like to thank Captain Phil for putting me over that wolffish and getting my personal best and possible the last wolffish I may ever catch. At the end of the trip Captain Phil announced everyone would be getting a free trip pass as the trip wasn't up to his standards. This was an unexpected gesture and a very nice one on Captain Phil's part. I was happy with my day. I ended up with 7 nice cod and a wolffish. My dad got 1 cod and 5 haddock and Eben got 5 cod and 3 haddock.

Great report - I'll look forward to more of your reports this season.I once caught a huge wolfish- truly a different feel from a cod/haddock/cusk/pollock
I thought I was snagged on bottom at first.
I should really scan in the pic
You're lucky- I think after May 1 you cannot keep them anymore !
