Friday I had all rigged up a 10 ounce lav and a blue/purple fly. Fishing was tough. We had rain, snow and sleet as well as some wind at times. I spent the day up in the pulpit jigging away. My efforts did pay off. We had a slow grind all day and the weather didn't make it any easier on us. Captain Phil tried all over looking for a hungry body of fish. He would land on some and it only seemed the shorter cod and the haddock were hungry. Then the spot would shut off. So off to another spot looking for more codfish. We hit one spot that last year on that time was a bail job and on the fish finder looked like all haddock so we gave it a shot and I hooked up instantly on the jig to a keeper cod. Then cast back out and a few minutes later was on again but it wasn't something that felt to familiar. Didn't feel much like a cod or haddock but what ever it was it was heavy. Well after reeling up and getting a good amount of head shakes a large grey form began to appear below the surface. Upon reaching the surface i was greeted to a large mouth wide open full of teeth. It was big wolffish that I had been looking for for quite a few years. Got it on the jig no less. After getting that fish in the boat my season was made. I couldn't really ask for anything more, my biggest wolffish to date and on a jig. I would like to thank Captain Phil for putting me over that wolffish and getting my personal best and possible the last wolffish I may ever catch. At the end of the trip Captain Phil announced everyone would be getting a free trip pass as the trip wasn't up to his standards. This was an unexpected gesture and a very nice one on Captain Phil's part. I was happy with my day. I ended up with 7 nice cod and a wolffish. My dad got 1 cod and 5 haddock and Eben got 5 cod and 3 haddock.
