JULY 26th - THE MOST NOTED SHIPWRECK OF THEM ALL & WHAT WAS FOUND

Postby EC NEWELLMAN » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:22 pm

This is a story sent to me by a commercial fishermen in Virginia who for years has become a wreck hunter, both beach and shallow water. What caught my eye about this was that some old Spanish coins and a cannon was recovered.

O, I thought to myself, another southern Spanish Galleon was located.....on till I read further and saw the name MEL FISHER, and also saw the name ATOCHA. But this story is not about the ATOCHA which sank off of Key West, but the 1715 Treasure Fleet, which went down about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach in extremely shallow water.

Though the ATOCHA has been considered one of the 'crown jewels' of shipwreck artifact recoveries with an estimated value of $400 million worth of treasure so far brought ashore, the 1715 Treasure Fleet , an estimated $900 million is still thought to lay on the bottom as only 6 out of the 11 ship fleet have been found.

Read this incredible story here which always has a strange twist at the start......The Fisher family heirs have surprising sold the salvage rights to, Queen Jewels LLC.

Treasure hunter Fisher's heirs sell salvage rights

Here are some pics from the dive and the treasure brought up, just a few yards off the beach...who would of thought!

A GOOD DAY DIVING THE 1715 FLEET!!!

Had a chance in my younger days to do some salvage diving myself!! Passed it up and boy did I agonize over that decision. That has to be exciting beyond belief finding and searching for treasure shipwrecks in the first place and then finding treasure especially gold and bringing it up. Beyond belief. That treasure hunting site is great. The caches the land based hunters find is unbelievable as well.
