Capt. Carl Krause (Gaspro)

I was born October 20th 1959 grew up in Babylon Village and started fishing at a young age in the Great South Bay . By the time I was 7 I had already caught a number of Fluke, Flounder, Weakfish, Bluefish and every other inshore fish that inhabited the Great South Bay / Fire Island Inlet area. I received my first rowboat when I was 11 and graduated to a 16’ Garvey at the age of 14 and I have been full throttle ever since.

I have always had a passion for fishing and after I got my first boat I was pretty much no where to be found. Much of my free time after school was exploring the bay and learning where the fish could be found. I spent years learning when and where the fish were at different stages of the tide. In between I learned how to build a clam boat with my brother and do fiberglass work. In the mid 80’s I got married and relocated to the North Fork to raise a family.

Long Islands North Fork has some of the best fishing that can be found anywhere on the East Coast. I started fishing the shallow and backwater creeks and was amazed at the variety and quality of fish that I was coming home with. This was all done minutes from local launching sites. I was working night shifts which enabled me to spend plenty of time exploring new territories of the Peconic and Shinnecock Bays as well as the Long Island Sound. Fishing was my passion and it was all I could think about day and night.

There is nothing that gets my heart pounding more than hooking up on light tackle in the skinny waters out east with a fish that is green and explodes with energy, this is the ultimate fishing challenge. Once you become a proficient light tackle angler, you'll find it difficult to fish any other way. What's considered "normal" fishing tackle won't feel right anymore. The bottom line is that light tackle fishing is not only more enjoyable and will make you a better angler. I have passed on my passion for fishing to my two sons Garrett and Kyle both of which are very successful fisherman in their own ways. I’m now learning new techniques from them both. This has helped me put more fish in the box for sure. I hope that I will get a chance to share my passion and stories with you very soon on the Skinny Water and Kids Corner Boards!
