Ken Mullen (Swell Rider)

I was born and raised on Long Island and started working as a Mate when I was 13yr on the Capt. Lou III for Mike Dannon and then moved on to the Starstream. I also worked out of Captree aboard the Miss Captree, with Carl and John Higgins.

When I graduated H.S. in 1984 I moved to San Diego and began working on the Long Range boats heading in to Mexico fishing Tuna. Mahi, Wahoo ect...When things slowed in the winter I headed to Alaska and the Bering Sea to fish Crab. Once I got a taste of the Money and the rush of working in those conditions I knew this is were I'll be making my living. Aside from Crabbing I also longlined Halibut, Sablefish and Pacific Cod, which provided a great living.

In 1997 I took a trip back to Long Island were I met my wife Audrey.. I stayed on the Island from 1997 to 1999 traveling back to Dutch Harbor for the fishing seasons and working in Montauk in the summers on the Three Star with Eddie B. In 1999 I married Audrey and convinced her to Move to Alaska. We back packed our way to AK, with no car, rented a little house in Homer, AK and set up shop.

I fished full time and my wife and I built a house in Soldotna, Alaska that we still own. In 2005 it was time to step away from the Bering Sea and commercial fishing in AK.

We decided to move to North Carolina to be near the beach and some warmer weather. I purchased my boat the next year and started my own charter operation, which was something I always wanted to do. Like everything, I've had my ups and downs but the business is going in the right direction. Being small allows me to take a more personal approach to the business and the bottom and wreck fishing has brought me back to my fishing roots.
